the journey: week on week, over six months, three dedicated groups of young children at akshar arbol international school, from junior to senior school, reflected and worked together to build peace through stories, games and simple, thoughtful exchanges, both, online and offline. The students drew from the wisdom of the stories in “One World” and “Sorry, Best Friend” from Tulika Books, and “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. Each chapter / story was scaffolded by an activity for reflection and the students grappled with their biases, prejudices, and conditioning. The group reported that they learned to be more compassionate, and to practice empathy in every day life. There are a thousand steps to walk on this road, and a thousand more to run. As Epictetus is reported to have said, “It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”
